Before summer arrives I like to sit down with my kids and talk about some ideas of what we would like to do during summer break. We make a list and highlight things that seem really important. Then we pull out a calendar where I've already added any scheduled travel, appointments, and camps to see what we can make happen.
You don't have to have a large budget to have a fun summer. There are many free or low-cost ideas and activities out there. Plus, the Macaroni KID Downtown-West Atlanta event calendar is FULL of local family fun as well.
Here are some free or inexpensive ideas to get you started, or to fill in some gaps. Whatever you choose to do, make some memories and have some fun with the kids!
1. Visit Local Parks
We have so many amazing parks to explore! From the fantastic playgrounds like Centennial Park's All Children's Playground to the fun walking trails like the Westside Beltline and Proctor Creek Greenway North End Trail, there's something for everyone. Why not create a list and visit a different park each week all summer long?
2. DIY Crafts
Use recycled materials or items collected from nature (tip: take a bag on a hike and find some great items to use). Create some crafts such as nature collages, bird feeders, and rock painting. Here is an idea for using objects found in nature to paint. Additionally, the Children's Museum of Atlanta is constantly offering exciting DIY crafts and engaging workshops for kids. These hands-on activities are designed to inspire creativity and learning in a fun, interactive environment. Whether it's crafting, science experiments, or artistic projects, there's always something new and exciting for children to explore at the museum. Don't miss out on the opportunity to participate in these enriching experiences that are perfect for sparking curiosity and imagination in kids of all ages.
3. Take a Hike... or Two
From local trails such as the Cascade Springs Nature Preserve to expansive county and state parks, there are numerous exciting options to get everyone moving. These natural spaces offer a variety of activities for all ages and fitness levels. Whether you're into hiking, biking, or simply taking a leisurely stroll, these trails and parks provide the perfect setting for outdoor fun and exercise. Cascade Springs Nature Preserve, with its scenic trails and beautiful waterfalls, is a local gem. For those looking to explore further, county parks offer extensive trail systems and recreational facilities, while state parks provide vast landscapes and diverse ecosystems to discover. Plan your next adventure and enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends, making memories and staying active together.
4. Backyard Camping
Here's a simple option that will make the kids' summer memorable: pitch a tent in the backyard! Enjoy stargazing, storytelling around a fire pit, and roasting marshmallows. If the kids prefer an outing, try a fun picnic campout in the sun at Piedmont Park. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, plan a full camping trip for an unforgettable experience.
5. Scavenger Hunt
This can be simple or elaborate. If the weather is hot or rainy, plan an indoor adventure. For outdoor fun, try a scavenger hunt with Tiny Doors ATL. These 7-inch doors, created by artist Karen Anderson Singer, reflect the spirit of their neighborhoods and transform ordinary spaces into portals of creativity. The numbered doors are free to visit and accessible to all ages, offering a delightful and engaging outing around Atlanta.
6. Visit a Splash Pad or Pool
Discover local splash pads and pools for a fun day out! Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta has a fantastic splash pad and beautiful scenery that kids will love. In West Atlanta, Center Hill Sprayground offers a great splash zone for the little ones. Spending a day playing in the water is a perfect way to enjoy time together and keep cool.
7. Go Geocaching
Combine this one with your planned hiking trip or bike ride and enjoy a treasure hunt with the kids. Find out how to get started here.

10. Visit the Library
Did you know that local libraries host free events all year round? If not, you can find many of these events regularly posted on your local Downtown-West Atlanta Events calendar , including the Cascade branch, West End branch, Dogwood library and many more. These events range from storytime and crafts to movies and dance classes and themed activities. Stay informed by checking the Macaroni KID Downtown-West Atlanta event calendar!
11. Bike Rides
Get the kids out there on their bikes. Find a bike trail or a park with a nice path or other area with room to ride and enjoy bicycling. Stop at the ice cream shop for a fun, sweet treat.
12. Community Events
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy local festivals, fairs, farmers markets, and outdoor concerts. You can check the Macaroni KID event calendar for events as well.
13. Science and STEAM Fun
There are lots of simple science experiments and activities you can do with the kids (or set them up to do on their own if they are old enough – tip: a table in the backyard is perfect for potential messes). Some of our favorites include 5 Fun Experiments Kids Can Do with Candy, A DIY Lava Lamp that Will Amaze and Teach Kids, and Make Giant Bubbles in your Backyard!
14. Gardening
Get the kids involved in planting a small garden or even just a few pots with veggies or flowers. Our kids love finding blueberries to snack on from our bushes! Another great option is to visit a local gem, the Wren's Nest. Located in Atlanta, the Wren's Nest is the historic home of author Joel Chandler Harris. This charming museum offers storytelling sessions, tours of the beautifully preserved house, and gardens that inspire a love for literature and history. It's a perfect place for kids to learn and explore, making it a delightful addition to your summer activities.
15. Splash in a Creek or Stream
Spend the day cooling off in nature while they splash and play. It's fun to see how creative kids can be playing in nature.
16. Have a Picnic
Kids love anything out of the norm. Eating a picnic lunch at the park or anywhere other than at the kitchen table is sure to be a hit. Pack a lunch, pick a place, and GO!
17. Community Service
Volunteer together as a family for community clean-up events, food drives, or other local opportunities to give back to the community.
These activities provide opportunities for kids to have fun, learn, and bond with family and friends while enjoying summer break – and without spending a lot of money. Enjoy your summer adventures!
